Eldest castle in the "Fraenkische Schweiz” area

From dynasty’s castle to Episcopal official residence of the diocese of Bamberg

Pottenstein castle probably was a foundation of the 10th century to protect the country, which belongs to the Margrave of Schweinfurt, as part of the ancient Franconian empire. The castle was used as residence of Count Botho of Carinthia (1027/28-1104), who was a member of the family of the Aribones, after his marriage with margraves daughter Judith. Since the year 1070 Botho called himself Poto Comes der Potensteine.
From 1117 to 1121 the Pomeranian missionary bishop Otto I, called "The Saint”, stayed in Pottenstein castle.
One of the castle rooms is dedicated to Saint Elisabeth, who was Princes of Hungary and Landgrave of Thuringia. In the year 1228 Elisabeth stayed in Pottenstein castle for some time.
For almost 700 years up to secularization (1803) Pottenstein castle was residence and official seat of the bishop of Bamberg. Since 1918 the castle belongs to Baron and Baroness Wintzingerode. Today a private castle museum is placed here in the eldest castle of the "Fraenkische Schweiz” area.
