Bad Staffelstein
       Ancient Settlement and Carolingian Residence
The history of the city of Staffelstein, whose name refers to an ancient place of court, starts at the Staffelberg, a mountain south-east of today’s city centre. The Staffelberg was already populated in the New Stone Age, in the Bronze Age and in the later Hallstatt Age (4th century to 1st century BC). The La Tène Age finally was the most important era in the mountain’s history: the whole plateau was populated and the settlement area increased from 3 to 49 hectares in the end.

Excavations in recent times provided conclusive proof that this ancient settlement on the Staffelberg was the Celtic city Menosgada.
In the geographical works of the Greek Claudius Ptolemaeus (85 to 160 AD) about the Roman empire Menosgada is already mentioned. Menosgada finally was destroyed during the Teutonic immigration around the birth of Christ.

The ancient settlement in today’s Staffelstein area is first proved by documents around the year 800. This settlement was called "Staffelsee”. At that time the Carolingian residence was placed here. Together with the village Banz Staffelsee formed an important district in the Carolingian empire. Probably during the regency of abbot Hartung important parts of Staffelstein – the so-called Fulda complex – was surrendered to the brotherhood of Saint George, the later canons of Bamberg.
On 4th July 1130 the Bamberg canons received market law, customs law and excommunication law from emperor Lothar III. These privileges also included – diplomatic – immunity.
