Pappenheim
     An Ancient Franconian Nobleman Family
Pappenheim castle was built around the year 1050. The ancient nobleman family of the Marshals of Pappenheim settled down here. Throughout eight centuries the noblemen of Pappenheim held office at all coronations.

The royal seat Pappenheim soon became regional centre, a well-fortified town with walls and towers. Among a lot of privileges, for example the right to protect jews, the city received the right of asylum and municipal law in 1288.
Within the protecting city walls vivid trade and commerce began to flourish.
Especially potters, crockers, nailers and edging tailors were incorporated in influential trade guilds. Although Pappenheim was beleaguered by famines, epidemics and pest over the intervening centuries the citizens succeeded to get through times of horror and pain again and again. With hard work they obtained wealth and property.

Local History of Pappenheim
First hints of human settlement in today’s Pappenheim area date from New Stone Age. Around 400 BC the Celts settled down here. A lot of Celtic cult sites around Pappenheim remind of that today.

Around the year 500 one first village was built after Franconian troops had defeated and replaced the Alemanni. The name of the Franconian leader was Papo or Papin and he was a nobleman. He has also been called "der Streiter” (the Fighter). The name of the city derives from his name.

Pappenheim is first proved by documents in the year 802: "Papinhaim in the Sualafeld”. Besides the first settlement an ancient royal court is proved. The owner was a landlord. His daughter, who was the widow of a count from Switzerland, finally donated the whole property to the monastery of Saint Gallen.
