     Barrow of the Iron Age
In the valley of River Streu where the new red sandstone plains extend into the lower shell limestone surface areas, agriculture is still possible. No wonder that numerous settlement areas and burial plots were localised here. Most of them have analysed by archaeologists already.
In this area two barrow fields from the early Iron Age are located. The discovery and exploration of these barrow fields are exemplary. The reconstruction of the original status of the barrows is already finished partly. Now it is possible to present vividly hints of prehistoric and early settlement to an interested public, which normally are unimpressive.

It were cremations solely. The adjuncts made of metal, which were found in the barrows, were heavily fragmented: small double volutes made of bronze, which were part of the ancient habit, and a lot of vessels. The relics of the burnt dead persons were buried in urns and put in grave mounds, which were surrounded and protected by a massive stone packing and a stone circle.

Local History of Ostheim
On 6th May 804 Ostheim is first proved by documents.

At the beginning of the 12th century Lichtenburg castle belongs to the Counts of Henneberg. Several new owners follow. In 1230 the castle is sold to the diocese of Fulda.

1615/1619 Ostheim receives market law.

In 1878 a fire laid large parts of the city in ashes.
