Burgsinn castle (also called "Old Castle") is a typical castle surrounded by moats. It is completely surrounded by wide moats, which are fed by a subterranean source. The ground-plan of the castle looks like a trapezium with towers at the four corners and an enormous donjon at the entrance of the castle.

The tower is about 22 metres high and its walls with a length of side of 8.50 metres are 2.60 metres thick. The entrance is placed at the height of the second floor, 8.20 metres above the ground. The entrance was erected in the 12th century. The other buildings belong to the same period but were renovated and extended during the 16th and 17th century.

Local history of Burgsinn |
|
A stone axe dated from New Stone Age is the first indication of human life in this area around 2000 BC.
The place is proved by documents for the first time in the year 1001: knight Hidolf of Tungenden, a follower of Emperor Otto III, exchanges his fief in Thuringia with Heinrich I, bishop of Wuerzburg, and receives the village called Sinna.
In 1334 Emperor Ludwig der Bayer ("the Bavarian) gives eternal market law to the village now called Synne.
In 1338 Dietz of Thuengen becomes owner of Burgsinn castle and local sovereign of Sinn(a) village.
Since that time Burgsinn castle is property of the family of Thuengen. Todays owner, Gottfried of Thuengen, is living in France for several years. Since then the castle is unoccupied and in a state of decay. |
