Baiersdorf
     Jewish Cemetery
The local Jewish cemetery is the oldest in the margrave county of Kulmbach-Bayreuth and Ansbach. The cemetrey probably was built within the city wall of Baiersdorf after the first destruction of the city by the neighbours from nearby Nuernberg in1388.
On the Jewish cemetery of Baiersdorf Jewish parishioners from the principalities of Kulmbach-Bayreuth and Ansbach but also from Bamberg found their final resting-place here. Finally the corpses from the Jewish cemetery of Tuechersfeld were transferred to Baiersdorf.

On the basis of the gravestones the integration of the Jewish population at that time becomes evident. The ritual symbols show clearly, which position the dead person held in the Jewish community. A Jewish grave is used only once. At this so-called "Good Place” the deceased expects the Day of Judgement.

Local history of Baiersdorf
First proved by the deed of donation of Emperor Heinrich IV to bishop Gunther of Bamberg in 1062.

The first local ruler mentioned by name is proved by documents in 1123. He was called the "Free Knight Lutold of Baierstorf”.

The counts of Nuernberg were protectors of Muenchaurach and also Baiersdorf.
