Neideck Castle
Neideck castle is a landmark of Franconian natural park called ”Fraenkische Schweiz”. The castle is proved by documents for the first time in 1219. Owner of the castle at that time was the familiy of Schluesselberg, Franconian aristocrats. They lived in Neideck castle until the last count of Schluesselberg named Konrad was killed during a siege of the castle.
Recent excavations have brought to light archaeological finds from the so-called Urnenfeld Age (12th to 9th century BC) and the so-called Hallstatt Age (550 to 480 BC). Besides that relics from the Salier era (1000 to 1150 AD) were found here.
The castle ruin is surrounded by two walls and two deep moats.

During the 18th century reddish and yellowish marble was mined from a quarry placed on Neideck castle.

This marble was used for the construction of the famous Residence of Wuerzburg and for the embroidery of the marvellous basilica of Goessweinstein.
