Local History of Fichtelberg
The development of Fichtelberg as mining city only began in the year 1602. A blast furnace was constructed to smelt the iron ore which was found below the so-called "Gleissinger Fels”.

In 1609 another blast furnace was constructed in the Fichtelberg area. Houses for the miners were built but also administration buildings for the electoral mining authority. In the following years the mining city Fichtelberg began to flourish.

In 1614 a sheet metal hammer began to work to the south of Fichtelberg.

Starting with the industrialization during the 19th century the situation for Fichtelberg as mining city became more difficult.

On 26th March 1859 the mine was closed. A very hard time of need in the Fichtelberg area began. Many miners had to look for new jobs or finally emigrated to America. The miners who stayed in the Fichtelberg area began working in the quarries, sawmills or in the forests of Fichtelberg forestry office.
