Wuerzburg
     Jews in Franconia
An exact date of foundation of the first Jewish community in Wuerzburg cannot be fixed definitely. The foundation probably took place during the first crusade. In the following years Jews from Mainz immigrated to the Wuerzburg community. From the first beginnings the Jewish community of Wuerzburg has been a community with close European contacts and integrations.

The gravestones, discovered in the Wuerzburg quarter Pleich in 1987, verify that the city was a centre of Jewish religion, culture and education, which was known all over Europe, from 1147 to 1349. The Talmud scientists and rabbis of Wuerburg of this era were associated with the most important Jewish communities in Germany and France.
At that time Jews from Paris, Montpellier and Vienna settled in Wuerzburg. The most famous rabbis and scientists, who stayed in Wuerzburg for a long time were: Eliëser ben Natan, his son-in-law Joel ben Jizchaq hal-Levi, his son Elieser ben Joel hal-Levi, Jizchaq Or-Sarua, Meïr ben Baruch of Rothenburg and El'asar ben Mo had-Darschan.
