Muenchsteinach
     Monastery Church I
Founded in the year 1102 the original Benedictine monastery was finally finished in 1180. The only building of that time which remained preserved is minster Saint Nikolaus, which was built between 1139 and 1180. It is a basilica with three naves and a cruciform ground-plan.
One of the two towers probably collapsed in the 17th century and was not reconstructed. For 350 years the Romanesque building was used as monastery church of the flourishing monastery of Muenchsteinach. During the Peasants’ War and the Reformation era the monastery was destroyed partly and secularized later.

Local History of Muenchsteinach
Muenchsteinach is first proved by documents on 8th August 912 ("Steinaha im Iffgau”).

In the 11th century the village is in the possession of the noblemen’s family of Steinaha. In the year 1102 Adalbero of Steinaha converts his castle into a Benedictine monastery.
